Don't go here if you want coffee. I asked for a latte. The waitress placed a cup containing some tasteless brown liquid in front of me and I had to add my own milk. I've been to countless cafes around England, Australia, Europe and many other countries and this place served me the worst cup of so-called coffee I've ever had the misfortune to be offered. So I give it the questionable honour of being my Number 1 for being the worst in the world. The owners must have a pretty thick skin to serve it up and then have the gall to expect people to pay for it. Or maybe they haven't actually tasted it.
As far as the food goes, I ordered some cottage pie. It was surprisingly good. If I was a food critic the most points I would deduct would be for over-salted food. This meal was just right. A mistake I made was ordering a serve of mashed potato with the cottage pie, completely forgetting that cottage pie comes with potato. Silly me. While the potato that came with the pie was ok the extra serve was a little watery. The rest of the meal was palatable. I'm not too familiar with pricing in uk cafes as I live in Australia, but I get the impression that at £8.75 for an ok Shepherd's pie and a cup of barely palatable coffee was a bit on the pricey side.
The waitress was a delight being kind enough to bring cutlery over to me after I forgot to collect it. -

Nice to have a proper cafe in the city centre but it is a little pricey for the quality of the food. The tea is pretty weak and the food is a little too greasy.

The Silver Street Cafe in Leicester is located in the Silver Arcade area of the city center. It is renowned as being a value greasy spoon and particularly known for its full english breakfast, which is very good value for money with a very decent sized round of toast or bread and butter provided! They have a couple of vegetarian options and a nice thing to know is that the eggs are cooked separately unlike many places making them okay for vegetarians. The main downside is the coffee is pretty dire and weak! The tea also does tend to be pretty weak so make sure you let them know if yu liek it made strongly or not would be my key advice for this greasy joint!
